What types of driving licenses are there?

As long as you are at least 16 years old, you will regularly come into contact with the following theoretical content in an SBF See course: Shipping law/KVR and SeeSchStrO, light guidance and sound signals, traffic separation schemes, fairways and maritime shipping lanes, buoyage and lighting, safety and distress signals, meteorology, environmental protection, propulsion engine maneuvering under engine, terrestrial navigation, nautical charts and nautical literature, nautical equipment, compass, distances and local determinations deflection, false directions, coupling and sounding and direction finding. In addition to theory, you will spend practical hours on the boat practicing knots.
A number of German-speaking boating schools in Mallorca also offer the inland boating license (SBF Binnen). This can be acquired in a combined course with the SBF See, whereby the inland license is irrelevant for coastal waters. Since April 2023, you have been able to use pleasure craft up to 20 meters in length on inland waterways with this license.
If you want to buy or rent a larger boat, you should find out whether it is equipped with a radio. If this is the case, you will need a radio certificate in addition to your boating license. On the coast or at sea, the SRC (Short Range Certificate) is required, in inland navigation the VHF for inland navigation radio (UBI). However, it is sufficient for one person on board to hold such a radio certificate.
How long does the purchase take?
The SBF See and SBF Binnen licenses can be obtained in group courses within a few days. You can often expect three days of theory and two days of practice, which are usually offered every two weeks. After the theory in the boat school, however, you need to consolidate your knowledge at home. A combination course lasts approximately one week. Of course, you can also request a private course at the boat school of your choice.
What are the requirements for the license?

You must be at least 16 years old, speak German (if you wish to obtain a German boating license), complete a medical examination and bring a passport photo. If you have a driver’s license, you must also present it. In principle, you can go to a boating school without any prior knowledge, which will take care of the formalities.
